“Okay,” I say, moving towards the whiteboard she has on the wall of her spare room. Why, I have no idea, but I’m grateful for it now. “What do we know about the witness who called in and claimed it was me?”

“He’s obviously someone you work with,” Katie says, perched in a spinning chair. She’s using her feet to twist left and right like it’s a nervous twitch, or maybe it’s just how she thinks. One of my first partners couldn’t think unless he was moving.

That drove me crazy. But with Katie, it’s actually sexy.

“Or someone who figured out I’m with the DEA.” I frown.

“How many people knew you were undercover?” Katie stands and comes next to me. She takes her own whiteboard pen and writes DEA on the right side.

“Adam, Forrest, and presumably a handful of others.”

“You don’t know who?” She looks at me.

I shake my head. “I wasn’t the original first choice,” I explain. “It wasn’t until they figured out who I was that I was forced into it.”

Her lips thin into a line, showing how thrilled she is about it, but she doesn’t say anything else.

“Do you have a record of the call?” Maybe I can listen, hear the voice.

She shakes her head. “I can’t share it.” She grimaces.

I reach out and draw her against my side, leaning down to kiss the top of her head. The movement startles her, and when she moves out of surprise she swipes green dry-erase marker across my arm.

“If you wanted to mark me, all you have to do is ask,” I tease.

She smacks me, but she’s smiling. Whatever tension was there has eased up. “I think our most likely lead is whoever made the phone call.”

I nod. I start drawing names, connecting them. I start with the people I’ve worked with at the DEA and add in Pierce’s people. “We think there’s someone working for him in the DEA,” I say, circling the relevant names. “I think that’s how Adam’s cover was blown. Someone knew we were meeting that night.”

“Did you meet often?”

I shake my head. “Once a month, max.”

She frowns. Then she pulls out her phone, typing something into it. She doesn’t move away from me, letting me keep my arm around her when I’m not scribbling on the board. I like that she’s comfortable with me so close. That I can touch her, feel her near me.

I want to make love to her, but this is more than that. She’s someone I’ve wanted more than anyone in my entire life.

She tucks the phone to her ear, and I hear it ring. “Michelle?” Katie says the moment it answers. There’s a pause, and she sighs. “I know, I know. But I need your help.”
